“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” – Eph. 5:15-17
Some choices are easy to make and some are difficult. Priority dictates what we do, at least it should. But seeing what is most proper at the moment isn’t always easy. Sometimes desire pushes everything else aside and takes control. So deciding what to do is just part of the battle. Doing it can be difficult. Perhaps the most helpful thing to keep in mind is this – a commitment to walk wisely, as God commands in Eph. 5:15-17. To walk wisely we must do what is right, which is always best. That demands that we consider all three dimensions of life. We must think about –
I. THE PAST CONSEQUENCES
We could and should learn from history. We can all think of some choice we made that was foolish. We can look back and say, “I wish I had not ___”. Sometimes we say, “I’ll never do that again”. But if we aren’t careful we will.
II. THE PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES
Some things that were fine in the past wouldn’t be now. Things have changed and it would be unwise to do what you did back when things were different. Paul tells us we should be “Redeeming the time” ( Eph. 5:16). So we dare not fail to make the best use of it ( Psa. 90:12).
III. THE PROSPECT CRAVED
What you do now will determine what happens later. Knowing every cause has an effect we should do that which produces the best possible outcome. Your choice will chart your future. When we choose the conduct we choose the consequences. And, since we reap what we sow we can predict the outcome. So, what do you want your future to look like? – HDS
