The Bible records Jesus giving the disciples the Great Commission. In Acts 1:8, it is the last command given by Christ before His Ascension: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” This is similar to Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus tells the disciples:
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. ”
The Great Commission was not just for the immediate disciples that He was speaking to but it is given to all believers. Today, the Great Commission is still being fulfilled by Lakeway Baptist Church as members witnessing for Jesus Christ to their next door neighbor, by our Church in actively seeking the lost in our community, and by sending and supporting missionaries into the mission field just as the Church of Antioch did thousands of years ago by sending Paul and Barnabas.
