THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT

“— the God of all comfort.”- 2 Cor. 1:3

Do you remember the old song that says, “Troublesome times are here”? Well, you could say that about every generation. This world is a tough place to live. Everyone has troubles and trials, and everyone needs comfort–that’s the bad news. The good news is that God is able and willing to provide exactly what we need. He is “the God of all comfort”, and that is a comfort to know! Knowing that He is at our side to encourage and support us gives us great courage to face the storms of life. Whatever our need is He is able to help.

• When I am sick, the Great Physican is at my bedside. 
• When I am impoverished, the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills is my Provider. 
• When I am lonely, He is a Friend that sticks closer than a brother. 
• When I am hated and despised, He loves me with an everlasting love. 
• When I have sinned, He is the Blessed Redeemer who forgives and cleanses me from all unrighteousness. 
• When I come to the valley of the shadow of death, the Great Shepherd of the sheep leads me safely through.

Whatever you face today, or may face tomorrow, you have the blessed assurance that “the God of all comfort” will be there to help you. And, He never fails! — HDS,8/27/08 & 2/6/13

SEIZE THE MOMENT 

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise. Redeeming the time, because the days are evil”.–Eph. 5:15-16

I forget the source of this story, but it makes a point we all need.John Wesley was returning home from a church service one night when a man approached him and demanded all his money. Wesley, however, had only a little money and some Christian literature. So the robber took all he had and began to run.

As he was leaving, Wesley called out, “Stop! I have something else for you.” The surprised robber paused. “My friend,” said Wesley, “you may live to regret this sort of life. If you ever do, here’s something to remember: The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin!” Then the thief hurried away.

Several years later, Wesley was greeting worshippers after a Sunday service when he was approached by a stranger. He was shocked to learn that this visitor, now a believer in Christ as a successful businessman, was the one who had robbed him years before! “I owe it all to you,” said the transformed man.

“Oh no, my friend,” Wesley exclaimed, “not to me, but to the precious blood of Christ that cleanses us from all sin!”

Had Wesley not seized the moment to share the love of Christ with this robber, who knows what would’ve happened to him. But because he did, the man was saved. Don’t miss any opportunity to share the love of Christ with the lost. Let them know Jesus loves them because you never know the impact you’ll have!

Ask God to help you make the most of every opportunity to share His love with others.5-7-13

THINGS NOT SEEN

“–the things which are not seen-“-.2 Cor. 4:18 

Some foolish soul made this often repeated statement–“We are so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good”. The fact of the matter is that just the opposite is true, We are so earthly minded that we are of no heavenly good! It is a fact that they who do the most for heaven are those who think the most of heaven. If we’re going to make it along the rough road of life we must think more of the better land that lies ahead. The apostle Paul found it to be that way and the same is true of you. Our problem is not that we think too much of heaven, but that we think too little of it. In his eloquent way Spurgeon made this point far better than I. Consider what he says and you will be blessed:

“In our Christian pilgrimage it is well, for the most part, to be looking forward. Forward lies the crown, and onward is the goal. Whether it be for hope, for joy, for consolation, or for the inspiring of our love, the future must, after all, be the grand object of the eye of faith. Looking into the future we see sin cast out, the body of sin and death destroyed, the soul made perfect, and fit to be a partaker of the inheritance of the saints in light. Looking further yet, the believer’s enlightened eye can see death’s river passed, the gloomy stream forded, and the hills of light attained on which standeth the celestial city; he seeth himself enter within the pearly gates, hailed as more than conqueror, crowned by the hand of Christ, embraced in the arms of Jesus, glorified with Him, and made to sit together with Him on His throne, even as He has overcome and has sat down with the Father on His throne. The thought of this future may well relieve the darkness of the past and the gloom of the present. The joys of heaven will surely compensate for the sorrows of earth. Hush, hush, my doubts! death is but a narrow stream, and thou shalt soon have forded it. Time, how short-eternity, how long! Death, how brief-immortality, how endless! Methinks I even now eat of Eshcol’s clusters, and sip of the well which is within the gate. The road is so, so short! I shall soon be there.”

A FATAL FALL

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” 1 Cor.10:12

After preaching from this verse yesterday, I thought the following story might be food for thought.

Back in 1911, a stuntman named Bobby Leach went over Niagara Falls in a specially designed steel drum—and lived to tell about it. Although he suffered minor injuries, he survived because he recognized the tremendous dangers involved in the feat, and he had done everything he could to protect himself from harm.

Several years later, while walking down a street in New Zealand, Bobby Leach slipped on an orange peel, fell, and badly fractured his leg. He was taken to a hospital where he died of complications from that fall. He received a greater injury walking down the street than he sustained in going over Niagara Falls. He was not prepared for danger in what he assumed to be a safe situation.

We must always be on guard against temptation. A victorious Christian is an alert Christian who watches out even for those little “orange peels.”
